“Content of Hate”

My heart breaks every day now. Someone else’s daughter taken away. The friend of a friend of a friend of a friend handcuffed and dragged down stairs and into the street. A worker beaten with fists by one, two, three, four, five, six, seven weaponized and disguised modern KKK. Masks instead of white hoods, but they inherited their black souls from grandfathers long dead. They pummel priests and pastors, and rip children from safe, loving parents. They kill because they can.

We know how they want this to end. Goebbel’s guidelines play out with each press conference. Blame the victim who can’t speak for herself—she’s dead. Blame the victim who stood up to witness their cruelty. He’s dead, too. Blame the five-year-old in his blue capped innocence. Blame the two-year-old who should’ve had better parents.

Their venom poisons every word they utter, every thought they present through distortion. They force themselves into our lives daily by creating their own content of hate.

Opposition surprises them. In their warped world of inhumanity, they cannot imagine anyone uniting in persistent, frustratingly legal resistance. Horns and whistles sounded in warning, phones raised high to record their brutality, doors locked against them when they think there should be approval.

Streets flooded with humanity screaming, “FUCK ICE! GO HOME!”

"Righteous Anger"

"Fire" by David Chapman

because you yell the loudest
TYPE IN ALL CAPS
divide and pontificate with provocation
you lay claim to justification
you demean those who disagree
through a false sense of superiority
you lash out with vindictiveness
choosing to injure and belittle
you suck others into your fallacies
with endless word manipulations
you deride and insult
to defend your flawed and mistaken reasoning
you rationalize your anger and hatred
by looking at everyone
but yourself
you are mean
you are cruel
you love no one
this is your failure
your loss
your inability that wounds
your harshness that kills
your unhappiness that warps and destroys
so scream out your
righteous anger
louder, louder, louder
until you become hoarse
until fatigue forces you to pause
until you must be silent
then listen to the echoes of your loneliness

"New Dark Age"

Trust your religion and religious leaders more than science, logic and reason. Trust your gut over scientific research and objectively collected data. Trust the story about a friend of a friend’s third cousin over documented and investigative studies. And then—TRUST NO ONE!
Our slippage into an under-educated population occurred gradually. First, we forced the content of our public schools to dumb down to standardized testing levels. Then an Us VS Them mentality bloomed that tainted legitimate media. Finally, we allowed Christian religious beliefs to seep into public and governmental institutions, to become a litmus test for viable candidates for many elected positions. The message shifted to TRUST NO ONE (unless that person has the same religious views as you).
So now we find ourselves, as a country, mired in obvious lies and more obscured half-truths that our gullible population cannot unravel. They blindly turn to sources for information that foster more confusion and promote distrust.
These are the most recent theories I’ve followed. Each one disturbing because they prey upon fear. Fear that someone’s out to take your jobs, undermine your marriage and family, or physically harm someone you love.

THE NEW DARK AGE BELIEFS (in no particular order):

First, women should have no rights to determine their own reproduction. This includes using any birth control. Women are secondary to men in many faiths, and therefore, deserve lesser pay. They shouldn’t expect respect within the work force. Legal protection for women being abused by men should be limited.

Troubling, isn’t it! We actually have a growing population that believes a woman’s place in in her home, where she may not even be safe.

Second, all of the “research” on climate change is false. Climate change is a liberal lie to undermine our profitable use of fossil fuels. They have some kind of secret agenda that will wipe out our economy if we turn to reusable energy and protect the air we breathe and water we drink. They have a plot, as yet unknown in details, to subvert the entire course of modern civilization by implementing laws internationally that could begin to contain the destruction of our environment. Many people actually believe that God will step in, wave his magical hand, and wipe away all of the damage we’ve done to the planet.

I cannot fathom why anyone would risk our entire planet just to prove they are right about a possible liberal agenda.

Third, anyone who’s different from you threatens you, your family and your community. Therefore, anyone immigrating here is suspect of engaging in behaviors ranging from taking your jobs to murdering you and your entire family, as you sleep peacefully in your home. (Thus, you must arm yourself with an arsenal of weapons and ammunition). Anyone who has a difference in sexual orientation must be ostracized. You have a duty to deny this group their rights to job security, medical care, purchasing homes, or even marriage. Many people actually shift blame to current weather disasters to God’s punishment for acceptance of “differences.”

I keep wondering why God punishes all of the “innocent” people, too, through these floods, famines, and other natural disasters.

Fourth, Big Pharma controls all of our doctors and scientist. Therefore, any program that benefits pharmaceutical companies should be rejected. This belief meshes together the facts and data that these companies have one agenda alone—PROFIT. Therefore, nothing that comes from these companies can be trusted. The latest, of course, is vaccinating our population. Many people believe these companies actually inject cancer causing agents into our systems in order to generate future clients dependent upon medications to survive. Many people believe that by refusing to vaccinate their children, they are protecting them.

I know that pharmaceutical companies drive all decisions by profit, but I also believe that resurgence of diseases like tetanus, measles, and polio far outweigh worry that Big Pharma want to make a buck.

Fifth, colleges are indoctrination centers that subvert the core religious beliefs of families and undermine the structure of American society.

I will admit that colleges do expose young minds to new worlds. The curriculum should drive students to critical thinking. My worry about colleges stems more from the fact that they are driven by profit instead of aiming for the purer goals of student self-actualization.

How do we get out of all of this mucked-up thinking? I look to our youth with optimism that they will filter out the lies and filth that my generation’s heaped upon them and create a courageous new world of enlightenment.

"Defense Mechanisms"

David Chapman-artist
Defend and Protect at all costs
bury unpleasant thoughts and feelings under, down, below
refuse to accept reality
deny, deny, deny
change existence and rewrite your life
fabricate your lies until they morph into your new reality
regress or act out
childishly punch the wall of your frustration
disconnect from your follies
forget, forget, forget
place each dissonant thought into a strongbox
locked away even from yourself
project your pettiness and bitterness onto the wholesome
react in opposition with your infantile impulses
blockade your imperfections behind fantasy
beat your spouse, kick the dog—never harm yourself
Defend and Protect at all costs

"The Optimist"

I cannot spend my days counting losses
focusing on withered branches and leaves
opening my heart to your dark decay
I refuse to bear your broken crosses
over my threshold—into my beliefs
by allowing your destruction to stay
like a hurricane that swirls and tosses
my gentle soul upon wild waves that heave
and boil, pulling me under and away
to the mirage of  dead albatrosses
where your empty eyes gaze restless and grieve
for the simple joy of a sun drenched day

"Preaching or Teaching?"

Over the last few years, the zealous beliefs of many of my friends means I find myself scratching my head in bewilderment and mumbling, “Really???” And then I tend to pull back, step aside, and look at not only what someone has said on any given day, but at how that person lives.
The “preachers” I shift into the column of “grain of salt” because I doubt their sincerity. They spend so much time proclaiming their views and sermonizing from their hilltops that they rarely recognize their hypocrisy. This is the woman who posts a daily devotional on her status up-date on Facebook but whose own relatives no longer speak to her. This is the man that proclaims his undying devotion to his faith while he lies to his co-workers and steals from his company. This is the woman who asks friends to pray for her or her family because they need a new car or money for a vacation. These are the people who always ask for more while they give less. And they never see the flaws within themselves while they function by spreading fear and misinformation.
I find myself avoiding this type of person more and more. At a younger age, I’d try to engage someone like this in a debate of ideas, but time and experience have taught me that extremists yell loudly and insult freely—both things I like to avoid in my milder middle age.
I have other friends who have deep and profound faith. Not all of them believe in the same religious doctrines, and some don’t believe in any religion at all; yet they embrace a spirituality that cultivates certainty and calmness. This is the woman who shares her beliefs not because she’s expecting to convert anyone, but because she allows friends to see her flaws within her life in the hope that others will find strength by her example. This is the man who questions the canons of his childhood as he survives a divorce and learns to redefine himself and his role as a single parent. His quest takes him onto a different path and leads him to a new creed. This is the woman who spent her childhood and early adult years mired in a religion that piled guilt upon her for every wrong thought or deed. She shares her journey for finding peace within her heart—and passing it on to others. These are the “teachers” in my life.
And although I don’t embrace the same beliefs as these friends, I never feel their criticism. They never react to me with hostility. They don’t expect me to change who I am or what I believe to match their viewpoints. They don’t define our relationship by forcing me to fit into their round holes.
So I find myself puzzling over these two types of believers—the Preachers and the Teachers. Both types profess great faith and use their religions to guide their daily lives. Yet, one grates upon me until I sometimes feel raw and bleeding. With the other, I see the nurturing that comes from their convictions. I understand the reasons behind their need to believe because it makes them better people.

“Pruning to Propagate”

Earlier this week, I spotted a Swedish Ivy at HEB that dangled possibilities before me. Years ago, these plants filled hanging baskets that adorned our back redwood lattice. Draping with Spider Plants and Boston ferns, their delicate glossy scalloped leaves contrasted to the spikey Spider’s hardiness. They sport a soft white or mauve flower each spring and fall. Of course, I added the ivy to my grocery purchases and found a nice spot for this piece of memory in the front yard. As they propagate easily, all I need is one to begin a new line of a forgotten favorite. A few clippings placed into a Mason jar of water, and roots will sprout soon.

Inside, my three Pothos dragged down to the floor. Winter’s unrelenting freezes showed no mercy to the ones housed in our small greenhouse, and outside only three or four pots now sprout in resilient defiance. Instead of cut flowers adorning the dining room table, the promise of more Pothos baskets sits in filtered light.

My Jade became leggy over the last few weeks. I lopped them off and have their cuttings set aside to cure. All of the Jade will shift outside to take advantage of our longer and hotter days and more sunlight to spur their growth. My troubles with Jade come from ignorance on my part, but this year my research should result in new growth for old plants and new plants that thrive.

My focus on nurturing each of these plants stems from a need to control something in the world around me. Every day, something new becomes endangered as our current regime slices brutally through our democratic rights. Propaganda’s incessant wail forces me to retreat to my garden where I can prune to propagate promises for tomorrow.

"Pissing Contest"

Hard and broken men

Boys encouraged to only win
            even if they cheat
as teens their acid words begin
            wrapped in bold deceit
first wives selected as breeders
            preference for a son
second wives are ego feeders
            to the  Golden One
third wives enhance affluence
            and erase aging fears
not one person can influence
             their lying veneers
Mamma loves the neediest best
            if he loves her most
her attention is a contest
            won by lying boasts
Daddy hungers for bragging rights
            on their gaudy stuff
he binds his praise to dark, not light
            can there be enough
as adults they hate each other
            and they still compete
to demoralize each brother
            to spoil and defeat

“Transactional Love”

A matriarch
Dead eyes behind false smiles
With hugs that suffocate
She demands reciprocity
Mother’s love contains conditions
Which child adores her?
Places her above all
Kneels before her in supplication
Begging for love

A patriarch
Cold heart behind deceitful charm
With praise that stabs
He commands compliance
Father’s love requires accomplishments
Which child shines brightest?
Gives him parental status
Rises before him with conceit
Pleading for attention

"Under Construction"

An engineering feat
Endless miles of concrete
Tower in expectation
Growth, growth, growth, growth, growth
Tons of debris dumped behind screens of decency
Profit and progress mangled and molded into prophecy
More is only more
Underneath everything rises the desperate stench of fear
Too much, too little, too late to matter
Under night’s protection push onward and upward
Pretending sustainability is wrapped into the core
Change is good
Until it isn’t

"A Bully"

“If you don’t like the real world, invent your own.” Rachel Maddow, October 5, 2012.

A bully
Hands clenched
Chin thrust
Legs spread wide
A stance ready for assault
Pummeling reason with illogical fists
Blow after blow
Lie after lie
Kicking the fallen
Feeding off of fear

"For The Camera"

The old photos reveal nothing
show no hint of the abuses
                     that darken your future
         Gape-tooth smiles, youthful
                     mugging for the camera
                                 don’t predict
                                             anorexia
                                             drugs
                                             despair

         The childish arms that hugged
                     friend and family
                                 Now
                     hang skeletal
                                 by your sides
         While your sunken eyes
                     and forced and frozen smiles
                                             lie
                                             lie
                                             lie
                                                         for the camera

         Pretending your world glows
         Making believe he’ll finally
                                             notice you
                                             love you
fit you into his small and selfish life
