"Competition"

My in-laws thrive on an antagonistic, competitive dynamic that leaves me confused and emotionally battered. Their monthly gatherings, usually doused with alcohol, disintegrate into hostile clashes whenever they are confronted with anyone or anything that doesn’t mesh with their clannish worldview.
I desperately attempted to fit into their tribe for many years. I endured their barbed comments, cruel exclusions, and open hostility because I convinced myself that all I had to do was somehow be “better” to gain acceptance. In my mind, if I could figure out the rules to their game, I would help my husband and son improve their relationship within the family. In hindsight, my constant anger, bitterness, and pain caused damage, too.  It took extensive soul searching on my part, along with a million arguments with my husband, to finally admit that I would never, ever belong.
During the last forty years, my response to the dysfunction varied depending upon my own mental and emotional health. I now pick and choose very carefully which holidays and events to attend, and I no longer take on guilt because I don’t try to improve relationships anymore. Most of the time, I believe that no one in the family even notices that I’ve disengaged from their turmoil and drama. They remain focused on their latest level of rivalry, like how many homes they own or the type of airplane they fly. Although they gather habitually, I don’t think they really like one another. Their connection stems from rivalry that fosters enmity. They are linked more by competition than affection.
            They play a sad game.

"Abuse"

He flattered her as he flattened her
            sucked out her laughter
                        siphoned her vitality away
                                    one drop at a time
                                                until she became two-dimensional

He paired cruel insults
            with rare compliments
                        eroded her spirit
                                    by belittling her
                                                convinced her no one cares
                                                            except for him

He made his harsh world hers
            forced her to choose him
before her parents and over her siblings
                                    isolated her from their love
                                                demanded she love no one
                                                            except for him

He scorned her appearance
            amplified her imperfections and flaws
                        derided her
as worthless and unlovable to everyone
                                                except for him

He mocked her interests
stole her away from her nature
                        moved her into his goals
                                    while tearing apart her dreams
                                                bullied her into forsaking everything
                                                            except for him

He vindictively cut her judgment
taught her to doubt her decisions
                        commanded she trust no one
                                    except for him
                                                as he brainwashed her
                                                            day by day
                                                                        year after year

"Missed Opportunities"

you judged me
never listened to my words
never learned of my dreams
never accepted my strength

you excluded me
never extended an invitation
never initiated friendship
never offered belonging

you hurt me
never helped without games
never explained all the rules
never proposed compromise

you hardened me
never allowed for differences
never acknowledged my wounds
never tolerated my spirit

you lost me
never experienced my humor
never encouraged my independence
never received my respect

“Righteous Anger”

because you yell the loudest
TYPE IN ALL CAPS
divide and pontificate with provocation
you lay claim to justification
you demean those who disagree
through a false sense of superiority
you lash out with vindictiveness
choosing to injure and belittle
you suck others into your fallacies
with endless word manipulations
you deride and insult
to defend your flawed and mistaken reasoning
you rationalize your anger and hatred
by looking at everyone
but yourself
you are mean
you are cruel
you love no one
this is your failure
your loss
your inability that wounds
your harshness that kills
your unhappiness that warps and destroys
so scream out your
righteous anger
louder, louder, louder
until you become hoarse
until fatigue forces you to pause
until you must be silent
then listen to the echoes of your loneliness
