"Drought"

This summer’s unrelenting heat means our yards dry a little more each day. I noticed today that several of the bushes out back have dead branches. Nature protects the core, and the peripheral appendages begin to wither. My heart breaks to see this loss.
Loss goes deeper this summer than wilting gardens. I’ve several friends struggling with serious health issues like cancer. I admire the strength they exhibit as they face each day with unbelievable optimism. They handle the new challenges life’s handed them with the unshakable conviction that every thought and effort will bring health back into their lives. For other friends, this summer’s trials come from aging parents needing live-in help, assisted living or nursing home care. Some friends will decide to move in with parents while others will move parents in with them.
For the generation of our children, we see job opportunities drying up overnight. Imagine spending four years in college, taking out loans to finance this education, and not landing a job up to five or six months later. These adult children find themselves moving back in with their parents as they regroup. Some hold tenaciously to their college part-time jobs because “something is better than nothing.” Those still in school wonder and worry about next year’s opportunities. How long will this economic drought last? Onto this brittle landscape, I watch in frustration as our petty politicians play with matches.
I know that we need rain. Not a flooding deluge that obliterates everything in its path, but a soft and steady rain—one that brings the sunrise in its wake, one that soaks deeply into the cracked ground, one that cleanses away the dust and cobwebs, one that heals our land.

"Ghost"

Time pauses

            when I dream of you
                        Reversing—
                                    pulling me back through years
            until I hear
                        your booming laughter ricochet
            You appear before me
            I embrace your solidity
catch a whiff of Old Spice,
                                    pipe tobacco
            My tiny hand clutches yours
            I am your child
                       again
looking up into your deep brown eyes
            You swing me up
                        high onto your shoulders
            I pat your chin—rough, unshaven
                        Suddenly
We stand in my front yard
                                                hugging goodbyes
                                                promising another visit
            Plans cancelled by death

Time pauses

            when I dream of you
                        Reversing—
                                    pulling me back through years
            until I stand
                        alone in the night
Suffering under the weight of grief
            Conjuring you with my heartbreak
                        your voice rises with enthusiasm
                                    strengthens with determination
            We argue politics
            We agree to disagree
                        again
looking into your deep brown eyes
            You vanish
                        leaving me sorrowful
            Regretting silly squabbles
                        Suddenly
                                    I stand alone
                                                searching for you
                                                listening for your essence

            Knowing you are gone forever

"The Harpy"

Above all, she soars
Her vicious talons sharp
She swoops
Her wicked claws rip and tear
Into her own children
Cruelly she slices her prey
Ignores their anguished cries
Her evil hunger feeds upon the flesh of her babies
She devours their adoration
Her soul-eating cravings insatiable

"The Weight of Her Sorrows"

her beloved child
unique
irreplaceable
each day a miracle
she shelters
advocates
her joy wrapped in loss

her life partner
unchanging
dedicated
each day a miracle
she lingers
vigilant
her love imprisoned by illness

her treasured sister
precious
prized
each day a miracle
she weeps
alone
her life changed by chance

her independent life
unconventional
melodic
each day a miracle
she fades
diminished
her essence cut by dementia

“From Behind the Glass”

Forehead pressed against the pain
with Vision blurred by labored breath
I push against cold resistance—
on the outside once again
Within sight
Yet out of reach
My desperation weeps
I cannot change
            your heartbreak
I cannot challenge Time—
Unless I shatter through the glass
                        scarring myself
            to protect you
